Purpose
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form and use the present perfect tense to describe actions connected to the present.
Lesson Explanation
The present perfect (“I have eaten”) is a compound tense, built from two parts: the present tense of the auxiliary verb haber (to have, in the auxiliary sense — genuinely distinct from tener, which means “to have/possess”) plus the past participle of the main verb.
haber in the present: he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han
Regular past participles: -ar verbs end in -ado, -er/-ir verbs end in -ido:
hablar → hablado comer → comido vivir → vivido
Combined: He hablado. (I have spoken.), ¿Has comido? (Have you eaten?), Hemos vivido aquí por dos años. (We have lived here for two years.)
A genuinely important set of irregular past participles must be memorized: hacer → hecho (done/made), decir → dicho (said), escribir → escrito (written), ver → visto (seen), poner → puesto (put), volver → vuelto (returned).
A genuinely important rule with no exceptions: object and reflexive pronouns must go BEFORE the entire haber + participle unit, never inserted in the middle and never attached to the end: Lo he hecho. (I have done it.) — not “He lo hecho” or “He hecho lo.”
