Purpose
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to conjugate the most common irregular verbs in the preterite tense.
Lesson Explanation
A genuinely important group of extremely frequent verbs breaks from the regular preterite pattern entirely, and — unlike the present tense irregulars from Part 2, Lesson 4 — these often change their stem AND drop the accent marks:
ser/ir (to be / to go — identical forms, distinguished only by context): fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron tener (to have): tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron estar (to be): estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvisteis, estuvieron hacer (to do/make): hice, hiciste, hizo, hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron
A genuinely useful fact: ser and ir share exactly the same preterite conjugation — fui can mean “I was” or “I went,” and only context distinguishes them: Fui a la tienda. (I went to the store.) vs. Fui doctor. (I was a doctor.)
Notice also that none of these irregular preterite forms carry written accents, unlike the regular forms from the previous lesson — this is a genuinely reliable signal that a verb is irregular in this tense.
Also notice hizo (he/she/it did) uses a z instead of a c — a spelling adjustment made to preserve the “s” sound, since ce alone would sound different.
