Lesson Explanation

A genuinely fundamental fact about Spanish, with no real English equivalent: every noun has a grammatical gender — masculine or feminine — even for objects with no natural gender, like tables or books.

A reliable (though not perfect) pattern: nouns ending in -o are usually masculine, and nouns ending in -a are usually feminine:

el libro — the book (masculine)
la mesa — the table (feminine)
el chico — the boy (masculine)
la chica — the girl (feminine)

Definite articles (“the”) change based on gender and number:

el  — the (masculine singular)
la  — the (feminine singular)
los — the (masculine plural)
las — the (feminine plural)

Indefinite articles (“a/an” and “some”) follow the same pattern:

un   — a/an (masculine singular)
una  — a/an (feminine singular)
unos — some (masculine plural)
unas — some (feminine plural)

Some common nouns break the -o/-a pattern entirely and must simply be memorized: el día (the day) is masculine despite ending in -a, and la mano (the hand) is feminine despite ending in -o. These exceptions are genuinely irregular, not a hidden sub-rule.
