Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly trigger the subjunctive in sentences expressing wishes, doubt, and emotion.

Lesson Explanation

Building on the previous lesson, the subjunctive appears when the main clause expresses one of a few genuinely specific categories, followed by que and a different subject.

Wishes/influencequerer, esperar, pedir (to want, hope, ask): Espero que vengas. (I hope you come.)

Doubt/denialdudar, no creer, no pensar (to doubt, not believe, not think): Dudo que sea verdad. (I doubt it is true.)

Emotionalegrarse de, sentir, temer (to be glad, be sorry/feel, fear): Me alegro de que estés aquí. (I’m glad you are here.)

A genuinely important flip: when the same verb expresses certainty rather than doubt, the indicative is used instead. Compare No creo que venga. (subjunctive, doubt) with Creo que viene. (indicative, genuine certainty). This certainty/doubt switch is one of the single most reliable tests for whether the subjunctive is required.

A genuinely important, related category not yet covered: impersonal expressions of necessity or value judgment also trigger the subjunctive: es necesario que, es importante que, es bueno que (it is necessary/important/good that): Es importante que estudies. (It’s important that you study.) This impersonal-expression category is genuinely distinct from the three verb-based categories above, since there is no specific person “wishing” or “doubting” — the judgment itself is what triggers the mood.
