Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form the present subjunctive for regular verbs and explain what makes it a genuinely different mood.

Lesson Explanation

Everything covered so far — present, preterite, imperfect, future, conditional — belongs to the indicative mood, used for stating facts. The subjunctive mood is genuinely different: it expresses subjectivity — wishes, doubts, emotions, hypotheticals — a category with only a faint trace in English (“If I were you…”).

The present subjunctive is formed by taking the yo form of the present indicative, dropping the -o, and adding “flipped” endings — the same flip already previewed in the previous lesson’s usted commands: hable, hables, hable, hablemos, habléis, hablen (-ar verbs); coma, comas, coma, comamos, comáis, coman (-er/-ir verbs).

The subjunctive is genuinely not used in isolation — it almost always appears in a subordinate clause introduced by que, following a main clause that expresses wish, doubt, emotion, or influence, as previewed in Part 1, Lesson 6: Quiero que hables. (I want you to speak — literally “I want that you speak.”)

Because subjunctive forms are built from the yo present-tense form, irregular yo forms carry through: tener → tengo → subjunctive tenga, tengas, tenga…; conocer → conozco → subjunctive conozca, conozcas… (recalling the irregular “yo” forms from Part 3, Lesson 1). A small handful of verbs are genuinely irregular in the subjunctive beyond this pattern: ser → sea, estar → esté, ir → vaya, haber → haya, saber → sepa.
