Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly stack direct and indirect object pronouns together, including the mandatory le/les-to-se change.

Lesson Explanation

Building on Part 2, Lesson 3: when both a direct and an indirect object pronoun appear in the same sentence, Spanish requires a fixed order: indirect before direct, and both go before the conjugated verb: Me lo da. (He gives it to me — “me” indirect, “lo” direct.)

A genuinely important, mandatory rule with no true exception: when the third-person indirect object pronouns le or les would appear directly before the third-person direct object pronouns lo, la, los, or las, le/les MUST change to se — purely to avoid the awkward sound of “le lo” or “les la”: Le doy el libro a Juan.Se lo doy. (I give it to him — not “Le lo doy.”)

This se here is genuinely unrelated to the reflexive se (covered in the next lesson) — it’s purely a phonetic substitution rule, and context (plus the accompanying direct object pronoun) makes the intended meaning clear despite the identical spelling.

With an infinitive, both pronouns attach together (in the same indirect-then-direct order) or both move before the conjugated verb — they must move as a pair, never split between positions: Voy a dárselo. OR Se lo voy a dar. (I’m going to give it to him) — never “Voy a darlo se” or similarly split. In an affirmative command, both pronouns attach after the verb with a hyphen, following the same indirect-then-direct order: ¡Dámelo!(dar + me + lo) (Give it to me!)
