Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to describe the specific focus of career coaching and distinguish it from general life coaching and from career counseling.

Lesson Explanation

Career coaching is a specialized area applying the general coaching principles (Parts 1-4) specifically to work and professional direction — genuinely narrower in focus than general life coaching, which may address any life area.

Career coaching is also genuinely distinct from career counseling, which often involves formal assessments (like aptitude tests) and more directive guidance about specific career paths, closer to the consulting model covered in Part 1, Lesson 1. Career coaching instead applies the same question-based, client-led approach from the rest of this course, specifically to career-related goals.

Common areas of focus within career coaching: clarifying what genuinely matters to the client in their work (connecting directly to Part 3, Lesson 4’s values clarification), navigating a specific transition or decision, and identifying limiting beliefs specific to career (connecting to Part 4, Lesson 3) — such as “I’m too old to change fields” or “I have to stay in this field because I already invested years in it.”

A genuinely important, specific point: a career coach does not typically administer aptitude tests or tell a client which career to pursue — doing so would shift the practice toward career counseling or consulting, moving away from the core coaching principle from Part 1, Lesson 1 that the client finds their own answer.
