Lesson Explanation

Konjunktiv II expresses hypothetical situations or genuinely polite requests — similar in role to the conditional mood covered in the earlier French course. The most common, practical form uses würde + infinitive:

ich würde, du würdest, er würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie würden

Example: Ich würde das gerne machen. (I would like to do that.) — the infinitive machen goes to the end, following the same modal-verb word order pattern from Part 3, Lesson 6.

A genuinely common, practical, polite use, mirroring French’s je voudrais: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (I would like a coffee — using a specific irregular Konjunktiv II form of haben, hätte, genuinely more idiomatic here than the regular würde-construction).
