Lesson Explanation
A genuinely important warning, distinct from French or Spanish: German plural formation does not follow one dominant, reliable pattern the way adding “-s” does in those languages. There are five main patterns, and a given noun’s plural must generally be memorized alongside the noun itself:
-e: der Hund → die Hunde (dog/dogs) -er: das Kind → die Kinder (child/children) -en/-n: die Frau → die Frauen (woman/women) -s: das Auto → die Autos (car/cars, common for loanwords) no change: der Lehrer → die Lehrer (teacher/teachers)
A genuinely important, specific detail: many plurals also add an umlaut (from Part 1, Lesson 1) to the stem vowel: der Vater → die Väter (father/fathers), die Mutter → die Mütter (mother/mothers).
Note directly from Part 1, Lesson 5: regardless of the singular noun’s original gender, the plural definite article is always die.
