Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form the plus-que-parfait and explain its function as a “past before the past.”

Lesson Explanation

The plus-que-parfait expresses an action that was completed before another, already past point in time — a “past before the past.” It is formed with the imparfait (Part 3, Lesson 6) of avoir or être plus a past participle — genuinely the same auxiliary-choice principle as the passé composé (Part 3, Lessons 3-4), just with the auxiliary in the imparfait instead of the present.

Examples: J’avais déjà mangé quand il est arrivé. (I had already eaten when he arrived — the eating was already finished before his arrival, another past event.) With an être-auxiliary verb: Elle était déjà partie quand je suis arrivé. (She had already left when I arrived.)

The same participle agreement rules from Part 3, Lesson 5 apply identically in the plus-que-parfait: agreement with the subject for être-verbs, and agreement with a preceding direct object pronoun for avoir-verbs.

A genuinely important, related structure: the plus-que-parfait frequently appears in the “si” (if) clause of a hypothetical about the past that did NOT happen, paired with the past conditional (a compound form of the conditionnel from Part 4, Lesson 3, using avoir/être in the conditionnel plus a participle): Si j’avais su, je serais venu. (If I had known, I would have come — both halves describe an unrealized past, genuinely parallel to the third conditional from an earlier-built Gabal course on English grammar.)
