Purpose
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply the grammar rules from across this entire course to identify and correct errors in real French sentences.
Lesson Explanation
This final lesson introduces no new rules — instead, it brings together concepts from across the course into genuine editing practice, the way an editor would actually review a text.
Consider this uncorrected passage: “Hier je suis allé au cinéma. J’ai vu un film que j’ai beaucoup aimé. Le film était sur une femme qui voyage par toute Europe. Après, j’ai mangé une pomme et j’ai bu du café.” Now consider a version with genuine errors: “Hier j’ai allé au cinéma. J’ai vu un film que j’ai beaucoup aimé la. Le film était sur ce femme qui elle voyage. Je n’ai pas manger.”
The error analysis connects nearly every part of this course: “j’ai allé” is wrong — “aller” is a motion verb and must use être as its auxiliary (Part 3, Lesson 4), not “avoir” — correct: “je suis allé.” “j’ai beaucoup aimé la” wrongly places the direct object pronoun AFTER the verb — object pronouns must precede the conjugated verb (Part 2, Lesson 6) — correct: “je l’ai beaucoup aimé” (and note: since “l'” here would need to agree if feminine, per Part 3, Lesson 5). “ce femme” uses the wrong demonstrative gender — “ce” is masculine, “cette” is feminine — correct: “cette femme.” “qui elle voyage” redundantly repeats the subject after the relative pronoun “qui,” which already serves as the subject (Part 2, Lesson 4) — correct: “qui voyage.” “Je n’ai pas manger” incorrectly uses the infinitive after “ne…pas” instead of the correct participle for the passé composé (Part 3, Lesson 3) — correct: “Je n’ai pas mangé.”
A genuinely useful habit to close with: proofread in multiple passes, each focused on one error category at a time — auxiliary choice, pronoun placement, agreement — rather than trying to catch everything in a single pass, since attention naturally narrows to whatever category is currently the focus.
