Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to conjugate regular verbs in the conditionnel and use it for hypotheticals and polite requests.

Lesson Explanation

The conditionnel expresses “would” and uses the exact same stem as the futur simple (previous lesson, including its irregular stems), but with the imparfait endings from Part 3, Lesson 6 instead: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. From parler: je parlerais, tu parlerais, il parlerait, nous parlerions, vous parleriez, ils parleraient.

Since the conditionnel and futur simple share stems, the same irregular stems apply to both: aller → j’irais (I would go), être → je serais (I would be), avoir → j’aurais (I would have), faire → je ferais (I would do/make).

Examples: Si j’avais le temps, je voyagerais. (If I had time, I would travel — a hypothetical condition, genuinely parallel to the Spanish/Italian conditional and the English second conditional from earlier-built Gabal courses.)

The conditionnel is also genuinely commonly used for polite requests, a function with no direct counterpart in the simple present: Pourriez-vous m’aider? (Could you help me? — noticeably more polite than Pouvez-vous m’aider?) and Je voudrais un café. (I would like a coffee — a standard, genuinely essential ordering phrase, far more polite than “Je veux un café.”)
