Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly distinguish several commonly confused French word pairs, even ones that sound identical.

Lesson Explanation

Several French word pairs sound identical (homophones) but have genuinely distinct meanings and spellings — a category of error distinct from English “their/there/they’re” but comparable in kind, covered for English in an earlier-built Gabal course.

Ou / où: ou (no accent) means “or,” (with accent) means “where” — the accent is the only distinguishing feature, but genuinely changes the entire meaning: Tu veux du thé ou du café? (Do you want tea or coffee?) versus Où est le café? (Where is the coffee?)

Ça / sa: ça means “that/it” (a demonstrative pronoun), sa is the feminine possessive “his/her” (Part 1, Lesson 3-adjacent territory): Ça va? (How’s it going?) versus sa voiture (his/her car).

Ce / se: ce is a demonstrative (“this/that”) or masculine article-like word, se is a reflexive pronoun (Part 3, Lesson 2): ce livre (this book) versus il se lave (he washes himself).

Leur / leurs: leur (singular “their,” or the indirect object pronoun “to them” from Part 2, Lesson 6) versus leurs (plural “their,” used only as a possessive adjective before a plural noun): leur maison (their house, singular house) versus leurs maisons (their houses, plural) — genuinely important to note that the indirect object pronoun “leur” NEVER takes an “s,” even when referring to multiple people: Je leur parle. (I speak to them.)
