Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form regular French adverbs and place them correctly in a sentence.

Lesson Explanation

Most French adverbs are formed by adding -ment to the feminine form of an adjective (Part 1, Lesson 5): lent → lente → lentement (slow → slowly), heureux → heureuse → heureusement (happy → happily/fortunately).

Adjectives already ending in a vowel in the masculine form add -ment directly to the masculine, skipping the feminine step: vrai → vraiment (true → truly), poli → poliment (polite → politely).

A genuinely important, irregular pattern: adjectives ending in -ant or -ent form adverbs with -amment or -emment instead of simply adding “-ment” to a feminine form: constant → constamment (constantly), évident → évidemment (evidently) — note both suffixes are pronounced identically, despite the different spelling.

Placement: adverbs of manner typically follow the verb they modify, especially in simple tenses: Elle parle lentement. (She speaks slowly.) In compound tenses like the passé composé (Part 3, Lessons 3-4), short, common adverbs typically go BETWEEN the auxiliary and the participle, a genuinely distinctive position with no direct English equivalent: Elle a déjà mangé. (She has already eaten — “déjà” sits between “a” and “mangé,” not after “mangé” as English word order might suggest.)
