Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly trigger the subjonctif in sentences expressing wishes, doubt, emotion, and necessity.

Lesson Explanation

Building on the previous lesson, the subjonctif appears when the main clause expresses one of a few genuinely specific categories, followed by que and a different subject in the subordinate clause.

Necessity/wishil faut que (it is necessary that), vouloir que (to want), souhaiter que (to wish): Je veux que tu viennes. (I want you to come.)

Doubt/possibilitydouter que (to doubt), il est possible que (it is possible that): Je doute qu’il vienne. (I doubt he’ll come.)

Emotionêtre content/heureux que (to be glad), avoir peur que (to be afraid), regretter que (to regret): Je suis content que tu sois ici. (I’m glad you’re here.)

A genuinely important flip, identical in logic to the Spanish/Italian systems from earlier-built Gabal courses: when the main clause expresses CERTAINTY rather than doubt, the indicative is used instead. Compare Je pense qu’il vient. (indicative — “I think,” expressing genuine certainty) with Je ne pense pas qu’il vienne. (subjonctif — the negated form introduces genuine doubt). This certainty/doubt switch is one of the single most reliable tests for whether the subjonctif is required.
