Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to list the French subject pronouns and conjugate the two essential auxiliary verbs “être” and “avoir” in the present tense.

Lesson Explanation

French subject pronouns: je, tu, il/elle/on, nous, vous, ils/elles (I, you-informal, he/she/one, we, you-formal/plural, they-masc/they-fem).

A genuinely useful, distinctive pronoun: on literally means “one,” but is genuinely common in everyday speech as an informal substitute for “nous” (we) or as a general “people/you” — far more frequent in casual French than English “one” is in casual English: On va au cinéma. (We’re going to the movies — casual, more common than “Nous allons au cinéma” in speech).

Unlike Spanish and Italian from earlier-built Gabal courses, French subject pronouns are almost NEVER dropped, since French verb endings are often pronounced identically across multiple persons — the pronoun is usually the only clear signal of who the subject is: je parle, tu parles, il parle (all three sound identical in speech, “parle/parles” pronounced the same way).

Être (to be) in the present tense (genuinely irregular): je suis, tu es, il/elle/on est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils/elles sont.

Avoir (to have) in the present tense (also irregular): j’ai, tu as, il/elle/on a, nous avons, vous avez, ils/elles ont.
