Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form the true passive voice with “ser” and use the far more common “se” passive/impersonal construction.

Lesson Explanation

The true passive voice, formed with ser + past participle (from Part 5, Lesson 6) + por (by), exists in Spanish but is genuinely used far less often than in English, and sounds noticeably formal/journalistic:

El libro fue escrito por Cervantes. — The book was written by Cervantes.

Note that the past participle in this construction must agree in gender and number with the subject — escrito would become escrita for a feminine subject, unlike its invariant form in the present perfect.

Far more common in everyday Spanish is the se passive construction, which sidesteps naming who performed the action entirely:

Se habla español aquí. — Spanish is spoken here.
Se venden casas. — Houses are sold. / Houses for sale.
Se necesitan empleados. — Employees are needed.

Note the verb agrees in number with the noun that follows it (se habla singular, se venden plural) — the noun functions as the grammatical subject here, even though it comes after the verb.

A related, genuinely distinct use is the impersonal se, equivalent to English “one” or generic “you/they”: Se dice que va a llover. (They say/It is said that it’s going to rain.), ¿Cómo se dice “hello” en español? (How do you say “hello” in Spanish?) — this exact phrase, using the impersonal se, is one of the single most useful sentences a learner can memorize.
