Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify indirect objects in a Spanish sentence and use the correct indirect object pronoun.

Lesson Explanation

An indirect object identifies to/for whom an action is done — in “I give the book to Ana,” “Ana” is the indirect object. Spanish indirect object pronouns:

me — to/for me nos — to/for us
te — to/for you os — to/for you all (Spain)
le — to/for him/her/you (formal) les — to/for them/you all

Notice a genuinely useful shortcut versus the direct object pronouns from the last lesson: me, te, nos, os are identical in both systems. Only the third-person forms differ: le/les here, versus lo/la/los/las for direct objects.

Like direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns go before a conjugated verb: Le doy el libro. (I give him/her the book.)

A genuinely distinctive Spanish habit: even when the indirect object noun is already stated explicitly, the pronoun is frequently included anyway for clarity or emphasis — this is called “redundant” but is standard, correct usage:

Le doy el libro a Ana. — I give the book to Ana. (literally "to-her I-give the book to Ana")

This redundant pattern is especially common with le/les, since they are ambiguous alone (le could mean him, her, or formal you) — the added a Ana clarifies exactly who is meant.
