Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly apply the Verb-Second (V2) word order rule, one of the most distinctive features of German sentence structure.

Lesson Explanation

German follows a genuinely distinctive rule called Verb-Second (V2): in a main clause, the conjugated verb must be the second grammatical element, regardless of what the first element actually is. This is genuinely different from English’s more fixed subject-verb-object order.

Ich fahre morgen nach Berlin.        (Subject first, verb second)
Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin.         (Time expression first, verb still second)

Notice in the second example: even though morgen (tomorrow) now starts the sentence, the verb fahre still comes immediately second — and genuinely important, ich (the subject) moves to after the verb as a result, not staying in first position.

This connects directly to Part 3, Lesson 5’s separable verbs and Part 3, Lesson 6’s modal verbs: in both cases, the conjugated element stays in second position, while the separated prefix or infinitive moves to the very end — V2 governs the conjugated verb specifically, regardless of what else is happening in the sentence.
