Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to construct a SMART goal, correctly applying all five required criteria.

Lesson Explanation

SMART is a specific framework for turning a vague aspiration into an actionable, well-formed goal, using five required criteria:

S — Specific: exactly what will be accomplished, not a vague direction
M — Measurable: how progress or completion will be objectively verified
A — Achievable: realistic given the client's actual current resources and constraints
R — Relevant: genuinely connected to what the client actually cares about
T — Time-bound: has a specific deadline, not an open-ended "someday"

Example transformation: “I want to get healthier” (vague) becomes “I will walk 30 minutes, four days a week, for the next eight weeks” — specific (walking, not vague “health”), measurable (30 minutes, four days), achievable (a realistic starting point), relevant (assuming this connects to the client’s actual stated concern), and time-bound (eight weeks).

A genuinely important, common mistake: setting a goal that is Specific and Measurable but not genuinely Achievable given the client’s real current constraints — for example, “exercise two hours daily” for someone currently sedentary and working 60-hour weeks. A goal that fails the Achievable test tends to produce discouragement rather than progress, regardless of how well it meets the other four criteria.

Practice Questions

1. What does the “S” in SMART stand for?

View Answer

Specific.

2. What does the “M” in SMART stand for?

View Answer

Measurable.

3. What does the “A” in SMART stand for?

View Answer

Achievable.

4. What does the “R” in SMART stand for?

View Answer

Relevant.

5. What does the “T” in SMART stand for?

View Answer

Time-bound.

6. What does “Measurable” require of a goal?

View Answer

A way to objectively verify progress or completion.

7. What does “Time-bound” require?

View Answer

A specific deadline, not an open-ended “someday.”

8. Is “I want to get healthier” a SMART goal? Why or why not?

View Answer

No — it is vague, not specific or measurable or time-bound.

9. Rewrite “I want to get healthier” as a genuinely SMART goal.

View Answer

Something like: “I will walk 30 minutes, four days a week, for the next eight weeks.”

10. Why might “exercise two hours daily” fail the Achievable criterion for someone currently sedentary and working 60-hour weeks?

View Answer

It is not realistic given the client’s actual current resources and constraints.

11. What tends to happen when a goal fails the Achievable test, according to this lesson?

View Answer

It tends to produce discouragement rather than progress.

12. What does “Relevant” require of a goal?

View Answer

That it is genuinely connected to what the client actually cares about.
