Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form and use the dative case to express indirect objects and several genuinely important impersonal constructions.

Lesson Explanation

The dative case marks the indirect object — to/for whom something is done: Я даю книгу студенту. (I give the book to the student — “студенту” in the dative.)

Masculine nouns take in the dative: студент → студенту. Feminine nouns ending in take : книга → книге. Neuter nouns take : окно → окну.

A genuinely important, distinctive Russian feature with no direct equivalent in the Romance/Germanic languages covered elsewhere in this course catalog: many common impersonal constructions use the dative for the “experiencer,” rather than treating that person as the grammatical subject at all — covered fully in Part 5, Lesson 4, but essential to introduce now: Мне холодно. (I’m cold — literally “to-me [it is] coldly,” with no true subject.) Мне нравится книга. (I like the book — literally “to-me is-pleasing the book,” genuinely parallel to the Spanish/Italian gustar/piacere pattern covered in earlier-built Gabal courses.)

The dative is also required after certain verbs that don’t take a direct object in the expected way, like помогать (to help): Я помогаю другу. (I help my friend — “другу” dative, not accusative, since “помогать” genuinely governs the dative rather than the accusative most learners might expect.)
