Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form the Italian gerundio and use “stare + gerundio” to express an action happening right now.

Lesson Explanation

The gerundio (roughly, “-ing” in English) is formed by replacing the infinitive ending: -are verbs take -ando, while both -ere and -ire verbs take -endo: parlare → parlando, credere → credendo, dormire → dormendo.

Combined with stare (conjugated: sto, stai, sta, stiamo, state, stanno), this forms the progressive tense — genuinely more narrowly used than English “-ing,” reserved specifically for an action happening at this exact moment: Sto parlando al telefono. (I am [right now] talking on the phone.) Cosa stai facendo? (What are you doing right now?)

A genuinely important contrast with English: Italian does NOT use the progressive for general facts or near-future plans — Studio italiano. (I study/am studying Italian, as a general fact) uses the simple present, not sto studiando, which would specifically mean “right this second.”

Object and reflexive pronouns can attach to the gerundio or precede stare, following the identical flexibility pattern already established for infinitives back in Part 2, Lesson 3: Sto lavandomi. OR Mi sto lavando. — both mean “I am washing myself (right now).”
