Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form yes/no questions and use Italian question words correctly, noting the key punctuation difference from Spanish.

Lesson Explanation

Like Spanish, turning an Italian statement into a yes/no question often requires no word reordering — only rising intonation in speech. A genuinely important difference from Spanish (Part 2, Lesson 2 of an earlier-built Gabal course): Italian does NOT use an inverted opening question mark: Parli italiano? (Do you speak Italian? — just a “?” at the end, matching English punctuation style, unlike Spanish’s ¿…?.)

Common question words: Che cosa?/Cosa?/Che? (What? — three interchangeable forms), Chi?, Dove?, Quando?, Perché?, Come?, Quanto/a?, Quanti/e? (Who, Where, When, Why, How, How much, How many).

A genuinely distinctive detail with no Spanish or English equivalent: perché does double duty as both “why?” and “because” — the same word covers both sides of a question-and-answer pair: Perché non vieni? Perché sono stanco. (Why aren’t you coming? Because I’m tired.)

Unlike Spanish, where all question words carry a mandatory written accent to distinguish them from non-interrogative uses (as covered in the Spanish Grammar course), Italian question words don’t follow this same accent-based distinction system — come can mean both “how?” and “as/like” depending on context alone, with no spelling change to disambiguate.
