Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly choose between the definite and indefinite articles and use common determiners.

Lesson Explanation

Articles and determiners come before a noun to specify or limit it. English has only two indefinite articles and one definite article, but the rules for choosing between them are genuinely subtle. Indefinite articles “a” and “an” introduce a noun for the first time, or refer to any unspecified member of a category: “a dog,” “an apple.” The choice between “a” and “an” depends on the SOUND of the following word, not its spelling: “a university” (starts with a consonant sound, “yoo”), “an hour” (starts with a vowel sound, since “h” is silent) — a genuinely common error is choosing based on the letter rather than the sound. Indefinite articles are used only with singular countable nouns (Part 1, Lesson 1) — uncountable nouns and plural nouns take no article, or a different determiner: “water” (no article needed), “some water” (determiner instead). The definite article “the” refers to a specific, already-identified noun — either mentioned earlier, obvious from context, or unique: “The dog barked” (a specific dog already known to speaker and listener), “the sun” (unique, only one). Other determiners include possessives (“my, your”), demonstratives (“this, that, these, those”), and quantifiers (“some, many, few, several”) — all of which occupy the same grammatical “slot” before the noun as articles, meaning you generally cannot stack two determiners together: “the my book” is ungrammatical; you must choose one.
