Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly form and distinguish the four present tenses: simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous.

Lesson Explanation

English has four present-tense forms, each expressing a genuinely different relationship to “now” — a system with no single-tense English equivalent, since choosing the wrong one changes the meaning, not just the style. Simple present expresses habits, general facts, or permanent states: “She works at a bank.” (a general fact/habit, not necessarily happening this second) Present continuous (be + verb-ing) expresses an action happening right now, or a temporary ongoing situation: “She is working right now.” Using the simple present instead here would incorrectly suggest a general habit rather than a right-now action. Present perfect (have/has + past participle) connects a past action to the present moment — either it started in the past and continues now, or its result matters now, without specifying exactly when: “She has worked here for five years.” (started in the past, continues now) “She has finished the report.” (completed at an unspecified time, but relevant now) Present perfect continuous (have/has + been + verb-ing) emphasizes the ongoing duration of an action that started in the past and continues into the present, with a genuine emphasis on the continuousness itself: “She has been working here for five years.” — genuinely similar in meaning to the present perfect example above, but placing more emphasis on the ongoing process than the simple present perfect does.
