Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and correctly use several common Italian-English “false friends.”

Lesson Explanation

A “false friend” is an Italian word that looks or sounds like an English word but has a genuinely different meaning — a trap that catches even advanced learners.

Libreria looks like “library” but genuinely means “bookstore” — the actual Italian word for “library” is biblioteca, a genuinely important distinction, and a false friend that also appears in French (covered in an earlier-built Gabal course) with the same trap.

Camera looks like “camera” (the photography device) but genuinely means “room” — the word for the photography device is macchina fotografica: La camera è grande. (The room is big — NOT “the camera is big.”)

Parenti looks like “parents” but genuinely means “relatives” (in the broad sense — aunts, cousins, etc.) — the word for “parents” specifically is genitori: I miei parenti vivono lontano. (My relatives live far away — NOT specifically “my parents.”)

Attualmente looks like “actually” but genuinely means “currently” — mirroring the identical trap already seen in French’s actuellement (covered in an earlier-built Gabal course): Attualmente vivo a Roma. (I currently live in Rome — NOT “I actually live in Rome.”)
