Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly trigger the congiuntivo in sentences expressing wishes, doubt, and emotion.

Lesson Explanation

Building on the previous lesson, the congiuntivo appears when the main clause expresses one of a few genuinely specific categories, followed by che and a different subject.

Wishes/influence — volere, sperare, chiedere (to want, hope, ask): Spero che tu venga. (I hope you come.)

Doubt/uncertainty — dubitare, non credere, non pensare (to doubt, not believe, not think): Dubito che sia vero. (I doubt it is true.)

Emotion — essere contento/a che, dispiacere che, temere (to be glad that, be sorry that, fear): Sono contento che tu sia qui. (I’m glad you are here.)

A genuinely important flip, identical in logic to the Spanish system covered in an earlier-built Gabal course: when the same verb expresses certainty rather than doubt, the indicativo is used instead. Compare Non credo che venga. (congiuntivo, doubt) with Credo che viene. (indicativo, genuine certainty). This certainty/doubt switch is one of the single most reliable tests for whether the congiuntivo is required.
