Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and correctly place Italian direct and indirect object pronouns.

Lesson Explanation

Direct object pronouns: mi, ti, lo, la, ci, vi, li, le. They go before a conjugated verb: Leggo il libro.Lo leggo. (I read it.)

Indirect object pronouns: mi, ti, gli, le, ci, vi, gli. Notice mi, ti, ci, vi are identical between the two systems — mirroring the same overlap already seen in Spanish. But Italian’s third-person forms are genuinely more distinctive: unlike Spanish’s single le/les, Italian distinguishes gli (to him) from le (to her) even in the indirect object, and — in modern spoken Italian — gli has also absorbed the plural “to them” role, technically replacing the more formal loro.

Like direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns go before a conjugated verb: Gli do il libro. (I give him the book.) Le do il libro. (I give her the book.)

The formal loro form, when used, is genuinely distinctive because it goes AFTER the verb rather than before it — the only indirect object pronoun with this reversed placement: Do il libro loro. (I give them the book — formal/literary register.) This full pronoun system, including the elision of lo and la to l’ before a vowel or “h” (L’ho visto., I saw him/it), becomes genuinely more complex when both pronoun types combine — the subject of the next lesson.
