Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly distinguish and use the English word pairs and sets most frequently confused, even by native speakers.

Lesson Explanation

Several English word pairs sound alike or nearly alike but have genuinely distinct meanings and spellings — a category of error distinct from the apostrophe confusion already covered in Part 5, Lesson 3’s “its/it’s” discussion. Their / there / they’re: “their” is possessive (“their house”), “there” indicates place or introduces existence (“over there,” “there is a problem”), “they’re” is the contraction of “they are” (“they’re coming”). Your / you’re: “your” is possessive (“your book”), “you’re” is the contraction of “you are” (“you’re welcome”). Affect / effect: “affect” is nearly always a verb, meaning to influence (“the weather will affect the game”); “effect” is nearly always a noun, meaning a result (“the effect was immediate”) — a genuinely reliable trick: “affect” = Action (verb), “effect” = End result (noun). Then / than: “then” relates to time or sequence (“first this, then that”); “than” is used in comparisons (Part 4, Lesson 1) (“taller than him”). Fewer / less: “fewer” is used with countable nouns (Part 1, Lesson 1) (“fewer books”); “less” is used with uncountable nouns (“less water”) — directly mirroring the many/much distinction from that same earlier lesson.
