The past tense system mirrors the present tense system from the previous lesson, with four parallel forms. Simple past expresses a completed action at a specific, finished point in the past: “She worked at a bank.” (a completed situation, now over) Past continuous (was/were + verb-ing) expresses an ongoing action in the past, often interrupted by another action or used as background: “She was working when the phone rang.” (ongoing action interrupted by a completed one — the exact same backdrop/interruption logic found in the Spanish and Italian preterite/imperfect distinction covered in earlier Gabal courses, though English marks this with continuous aspect rather than a separate simple past tense.) Past perfect (had + past participle) expresses an action completed before another past action or time — establishing a “past before the past”: “She had finished the report before the meeting started.” (finishing happened before the meeting, both in the past, but one clearly precedes the other) Past perfect continuous (had + been + verb-ing) emphasizes the ongoing duration of an action up until another point in the past: “She had been working there for five years when the company closed.” — the working continued right up until the closing, with genuine emphasis on that duration.Practice Questions
