Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to greet someone appropriately based on time of day, introduce yourself by name, and respond correctly to a basic introduction.

Lesson Explanation

English greetings change depending on the time of day:

Good morning. (used before noon)
Good afternoon. (used from noon until evening)
Good evening. (used in the evening)

Hello and Hi are neutral greetings that work at any time of day. Hi is more casual than Hello.

A genuinely important, separate word: Good night is not a greeting used when meeting someone — it is only used when leaving or going to bed. Using “Good night” to greet someone arriving is a common mistake.

To introduce yourself by name, say: My name is [name]. or the shorter, casual I’m [name].

To ask someone else’s name: What’s your name? A polite response after learning someone’s name is: Nice to meet you.
