A theme (Design tab → Themes gallery) applies a coordinated set of colors, fonts, and effects across your entire presentation at once — genuinely different from manually formatting each slide individually, since a theme change updates every slide simultaneously, keeping everything visually consistent.
Design Ideas (Design tab → Design Ideas, requires an internet connection) analyzes your slide’s actual current content and suggests several complete layout redesigns — genuinely useful for turning a plain bullet-point slide into something more visually engaging, without manually repositioning everything yourself.
A genuinely important distinction: a theme controls the overall color palette, font choices, and background style — but it does not automatically fix poor content organization, too much text on one slide, or a genuinely confusing structure. Applying an attractive theme to a slide already overloaded with text produces an attractive-looking overloaded slide, not a genuinely improved one.
Color schemes within a theme (Design tab → Variants) let you switch between several coordinated color options without changing the theme’s underlying fonts or layout structure — a genuinely quick way to adjust mood or match brand colors without starting over.
