Lesson Explanation

This final lesson introduces no new rules — instead, it brings together concepts from across the course into genuine editing practice, the way an editor would actually review a text.

Consider this uncorrected passage: “Ich bin gestern ins Kino gegehen. Weil ich hatte keine Zeit, ich habe den Film nicht ganz gesehen. Der Film war über ein Mann, der reist durch Europa.” (I went to the cinema yesterday. Because I didn’t have time, I didn’t watch the whole film. The film was about a man who travels through Europe.)

The error analysis connects nearly every part of this course: “gegehen” is an incorrect participle — correct is “gegangen” (Part 4, Lesson 2, irregular participle). “Weil ich hatte keine Zeit, ich habe…” violates two rules at once: after “weil,” the verb-last rule must apply (Part 2, Lesson 3), AND the subordinate clause in first position forces inversion in the main clause (Part 2, Lesson 2) — correct: “Weil ich keine Zeit hatte, habe ich…” “über ein Mann” is missing the correct accusative article after the preposition “über” (Part 3, Lesson 6, a two-way preposition taking the accusative here, since it refers to the film’s subject/topic) — correct: “über einen Mann.” “der reist durch Europa” is a relative clause that must also follow the verb-last rule (Part 2, Lesson 5) — correct: “der durch Europa reist.”

Corrected text: “Ich bin gestern ins Kino gegangen. Weil ich keine Zeit hatte, habe ich den Film nicht ganz gesehen. Der Film war über einen Mann, der durch Europa reist.”

A genuinely useful habit to close with: proofread in multiple passes, each focused on one error category at a time — word order, case endings, verb forms — rather than trying to catch everything in a single pass, since attention naturally narrows to whatever category is currently the focus.
