Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to list the cautionable offences under Law 12, beyond the reckless-challenge standard already covered.

Lesson Explanation

Building on Part 2, Lesson 3’s reckless-challenge standard, a player is also cautioned (shown a yellow card) for a further list of offences unrelated to physical challenge severity — genuinely important to know as its own separate list, since these apply regardless of how careful or careless the underlying act was.

A player is cautioned for: persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game (repeated fouling, even if each individual foul was only careless); dissent by word or action (arguing with a match official’s decision); unsporting behavior (a broad category covering simulation/diving, deliberate handball to prevent a goal or promising attack without meeting the sending-off threshold, and many other acts against the spirit of fair play); persistently offending against the Laws; delaying the restart of play; failing to respect the required distance at a corner kick, free kick, or throw-in; entering the video operation room (VOR), or approaching or entering the referee review area (RRA), a genuinely 2020s-era addition connected to the VAR protocol covered fully in Part 5, Lesson 5; and unauthorized entry/exit or leaving the field without the referee’s permission.

A genuinely important consequence-based rule: a player who receives a second caution in the same match is automatically sent off (a “second yellow,” shown alongside a red card) — meaning the cumulative effect of two cautionable offences, even two entirely different and individually minor ones, escalates to the same practical outcome as a single sending-off offence, covered fully in the next lesson.
