Lesson Explanation

A genuinely important point about the division of labor: SAOT does not replace the human judgment call from Part 4, Lesson 2 about whether a player in an offside position was actively involved in play (interfering, gaining advantage) — it only assists with the more purely mechanical, factual question of a player’s exact position and the exact moment the ball was played. The subjective “was this player interfering with an opponent’s ability to play” judgment remains a human decision by the referee and VAR, protected under the same “Referee’s Call” logic from Part 1, Lesson 3, applied here to the VAR’s own judgment calls rather than only the on-field referee’s.
