Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly distinguish and use several commonly confused German word pairs.

Lesson Explanation

Several German word pairs sound similar or have related meanings but are genuinely often confused — even by native speakers.

Als / wie: als is used for inequality (comparable to “than,” Part 4, Lesson 4), wie for equality: Sie ist größer als ich. (She is taller than me — inequality) versus Sie ist so groß wie ich. (She is as tall as me — equality) — a genuinely common error is “größer wie” instead of “größer als.”

Seit / seid: seit is a temporal preposition (“since,” dative, Part 3, Lesson 3), seid is the “ihr” form of “sein” (Part 1, Lesson 4): Ich wohne hier seit zwei Jahren. (I’ve lived here for two years) versus Ihr seid meine Freunde. (You are my friends).

Das / dass: das is the neuter article or a relative pronoun (Part 2, Lesson 5), dass is a subordinating conjunction (Part 1, Lesson 6) that introduces a subordinate clause: Das Buch, das ich lese, ist gut. (The book that I’m reading is good — article/relative pronoun) versus Ich weiß, dass du recht hast. (I know that you’re right — conjunction) — a genuinely useful test: if you can substitute “welches” (which), “das” is correct; if not, “dass” is correct.

Wieder / wider: wieder means “again” (Ich komme wieder. — I’ll come again), wider means “against” and appears almost only in fixed expressions like widersprechen (to contradict) — wider is genuinely rare in modern usage outside these fixed compounds.
