By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form Konjunktiv II and use it correctly for hypotheticals, wishes, and polite requests.

Lesson Explanation

Konjunktiv II expresses the hypothetical, the unreal, or polite restraint — genuinely comparable to the Spanish/Italian conditional and the second conditional from an earlier-built Gabal course on English grammar.

For most verbs, Konjunktiv II is today formed with würde plus an infinitive — a genuinely practical simplification that usually replaces the “true” form derived from the Präteritum (below) in everyday use: ich würde spielen, du würdest spielen, er würde spielen, etc.

For a few very common verbs, however, the “true” Konjunktiv II form — derived from the Präteritum stem, with an umlaut where possible — remains the everyday standard instead of the würde-construction: sein → ich wäre, haben → ich hätte, werden → ich würde (identical to the auxiliary form), können → ich könnte, müssen → ich müsste, wissen → ich wüsste.

Examples: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. (If I had time, I would come — a hypothetical condition, directly comparable to the second conditional.) Konjunktiv II is also genuinely commonly used for polite requests, a function with no direct counterpart in the simple present: Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me? — noticeably more polite than Können Sie mir helfen?) and Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. (I would like a coffee — a standard ordering phrase, more polite than “Ich habe gern…”).
