Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly form the past perfect and the Futur I, and explain their respective functions.

Lesson Explanation

The past perfect (Plusquamperfekt) expresses a “past before the past” — an action that was completed before another, already past point in time. It is formed with the Präteritum (previous lesson) of haben or sein plus a participle — genuinely the same auxiliary-choice principle as the perfect tense (Part 4, Lesson 2), just with the auxiliary in the Präteritum instead of the present: Ich hatte das Buch schon gelesen, bevor der Film anfing. (I had already read the book before the movie started — the reading was already finished before the movie, another past event, began).

The Futur I (future tense) is formed with the auxiliary verb werden (Part 1, Lesson 4) plus an infinitive: ich werde spielen, du wirst spielen, er wird spielen, wir werden spielen, ihr werdet spielen, sie werden spielen. The infinitive sits at the end of the sentence — a direct example of the sentence bracket covered fully in Part 5, Lesson 6.

As already mentioned in Part 4, Lesson 1, the Futur I is used less often in spoken German than in English, since the present tense with a time expression often serves the same function. The Futur I is instead genuinely more common for predictions, guesses, or promises without an explicit time expression: Es wird bald regnen. (It will rain soon — a prediction) or to express determination: Ich werde das schaffen! (I will manage this!)
