Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to correctly distinguish the nine two-way prepositions between accusative and dative, depending on meaning.

Lesson Explanation

Unlike the fixed preposition groups from the previous lesson, the nine two-way prepositionsan, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen (at, on, behind, in, next to, over, under, in front of, between) — require EITHER the accusative OR the dative, depending on meaning — a genuinely elegant system based directly on motion versus position.

The basic rule: dative for a fixed position (the question “wo?” — where?), accusative for motion toward a direction (the question “wohin?” — where to?):

Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (dative — where? — fixed position)
Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. (accusative — where to? — direction of motion)

This genuinely elegant distinction applies identically to all nine prepositions: Der Hund schläft in dem Zimmer. (dative, position) versus Der Hund läuft in das Zimmer. (accusative, motion).

A genuinely useful detail: in dem frequently contracts colloquially to im, and in das to ins — similar contractions also exist for an dem → am and an das → ans, comparable to the Italian “preposizioni articolate” from an earlier-built Gabal course, though less extensive than in Italian.

A genuinely important test for verbs that don’t themselves express clear motion or position: ask whether the answer would logically be given with “wo” (dative) or “wohin” (accusative), regardless of the verb itself.
