Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize the dative case, explain its function as the indirect object case, and apply the full article change.

Lesson Explanation

The dative marks the indirect object — to whom or for whom something is done: Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch. (I give the man the book — “dem Mann” is the indirect object, to whom the book is given).

Unlike the accusative (previous lesson, which changes only the masculine), the dative changes ALL gender and plural forms — a genuinely more comprehensive pattern:

masculine: derdem
feminine: dieder
neuter: dasdem
plural: dieden

A genuinely important, often overlooked detail: dative plural nouns often additionally take the ending -n, if they don’t already have one: den Kindern (from “die Kinder”).

Certain prepositions always require the dative — this system is covered fully in Part 3, Lesson 5: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu (from, at, with, after, since, from/of, to): Ich fahre mit dem Auto. (I’m driving by car — “dem Auto” is in the dative, since “mit” requires it).

The personal pronoun in the dative: ich → mir, du → dir, er → ihm, sie → ihr, es → ihm, wir → uns, ihr → euch, sie → ihnen. A genuinely frequent error among German learners is confusing accusative and dative pronouns, since both cases can appear together with certain verbs (“geben,” “sagen,” “zeigen” — to give, to say, to show): Ich gebe ihm das Buch. (“ihm” dative = to whom, “das Buch” accusative = what).
