Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to construct a SMART goal, correctly applying all five required criteria.

Lesson Explanation

SMART is a specific framework for turning a vague aspiration into an actionable, well-formed goal, using five required criteria:

S — Specific: exactly what will be accomplished, not a vague direction
M — Measurable: how progress or completion will be objectively verified
A — Achievable: realistic given the client's actual current resources and constraints
R — Relevant: genuinely connected to what the client actually cares about
T — Time-bound: has a specific deadline, not an open-ended "someday"

Example transformation: “I want to get healthier” (vague) becomes “I will walk 30 minutes, four days a week, for the next eight weeks” — specific (walking, not vague “health”), measurable (30 minutes, four days), achievable (a realistic starting point), relevant (assuming this connects to the client’s actual stated concern), and time-bound (eight weeks).

A genuinely important, common mistake: setting a goal that is Specific and Measurable but not genuinely Achievable given the client’s real current constraints — for example, “exercise two hours daily” for someone currently sedentary and working 60-hour weeks. A goal that fails the Achievable test tends to produce discouragement rather than progress, regardless of how well it meets the other four criteria.

Practice Questions

1. Is “I want to get healthier” a SMART goal? Why or why not?

View Answer

No – it is vague and lacks specificity, a measurable target, and a timeframe.

2. Rewrite “I want to get healthier” as a genuinely SMART goal.

View Answer

Something like: “I will walk 30 minutes, five days a week, for the next 8 weeks.”

3. A client currently sedentary and working 60-hour weeks sets a goal to “exercise two hours daily.” Which SMART criterion does this likely fail, and why?

View Answer

Achievable – given the client’s current schedule and starting point, two hours daily is likely unrealistic.

4. What tends to happen when a goal fails the Achievable test, according to this lesson?

View Answer

The client is likely to fall short repeatedly and lose motivation, since the goal was unrealistic from the start.

5. A client sets a goal to “read more books” with no number or deadline attached. Which two SMART criteria does this most clearly fail?

View Answer

Measurable and Time-bound.

6. A goal states, “I will save $500 per month for the next 6 months toward a house down payment.” Which SMART criterion does the deadline (“next 6 months”) satisfy?

View Answer

Time-bound.

7. A client’s goal is technically specific and measurable, but has nothing to do with anything the client actually cares about. Which SMART criterion does this fail?

View Answer

Relevant.

8. What does “Measurable” require of a goal?

View Answer

A way to track progress or know objectively whether the goal has been achieved.

9. A client wants to “become a better public speaker.” Rewrite this as a SMART goal, adding at least a measurable element and a timeframe.

View Answer

Something like: “I will give three practice presentations to a small group within the next 2 months, and join a public speaking group by the end of month one.”

10. A goal like “I will run a marathon next month” is set by someone who has never run more than a mile. Which criterion does this most clearly fail?

View Answer

Achievable.

11. What does “Relevant” require of a goal, according to this lesson?

View Answer

That the goal genuinely connects to something the client actually cares about or values.

12. A client sets the goal “increase my freelance income by $1,000/month within 90 days.” Identify which SMART letter each part of this goal satisfies: the dollar figure, and the 90-day window.

View Answer

The dollar figure satisfies Measurable (and contributes to Specific); the 90-day window satisfies Time-bound.
