Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to conjugate regular verbs in the condizionale and use it to express hypothetical actions and polite requests.

Lesson Explanation

The condizionale expresses “would,” using the infinitive as its stem (with -are verbs shifting their a to e first) plus one shared set of endings across all three verb groups:

parlerei, parleresti, parlerebbe, parleremmo, parlereste, parlerebbero crederei, crederesti, crederebbe, crederemmo, credereste, crederebbero dormirei, dormiresti, dormirebbe, dormiremmo, dormireste, dormirebbero

A genuinely useful spelling note tied to Part 1, Lesson 1’s hard/soft consonant rules: -are and -ere verbs whose stem ends in -c or -g insert an h before the condizionale endings to preserve the hard sound: cercherei (I would search), not “cercerei.”

The same irregular stems that affect the futuro semplice (next lesson) also apply here: esseresarei (would be), avereavrei (would have), poterepotrei (could/would be able to), doveredovrei (should/would have to).

Examples: Mi piacerebbe viaggiare in Italia. (I would like to travel to Italy.), Potresti aiutarmi? (Could/Would you be able to help me?) — this last example shows the condizionale’s genuinely common use for polite requests, softer than a direct present-tense ask.
