Purpose
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify which verbs take “essere” as their passato prossimo auxiliary and correctly agree the past participle with the subject.
Lesson Explanation
A specific, genuinely important group of verbs uses essere instead of avere as the passato prossimo auxiliary — mainly verbs of motion, state change, and existence, plus all reflexive verbs (already flagged in Part 3, Lesson 3):
andare (to go) → essere andato venire (to come) → essere venuto partire (to leave) → essere partito arrivare (to arrive) → essere arrivato nascere (to be born) → essere nato morire (to die) → essere morto
The genuinely crucial rule with no parallel in the avere group: when essere is the auxiliary, the past participle MUST agree in gender and number with the subject, exactly like an adjective (Part 1, Lesson 6):
Marco è andato al cinema. — Marco went to the cinema. (masc. singular) Anna è andata al cinema. — Anna went to the cinema. (fem. singular) I ragazzi sono andati al cinema. — The boys went. (masc. plural) Le ragazze sono andate al cinema. — The girls went. (fem. plural)
There is no fully reliable shortcut for which verbs take essere — it is a genuinely memorized list, though many students use the mnemonic that most (not all) essere verbs describe movement to/from a place or a change of state/existence, unlike the broader, more “active” group taking avere.
