Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify whether an Italian noun is masculine or feminine and select the correct definite article, including the genuinely irregular forms.

Lesson Explanation

Like Spanish, every Italian noun has a grammatical gender. A reliable pattern: nouns ending in -o are usually masculine, nouns ending in -a are usually feminine, and nouns ending in -e can be either and must be memorized individually:

il libro — the book (masculine)
la casa — the house (feminine)
il padre — the father (masculine, -e ending)
la notte — the night (feminine, -e ending)

Italian definite articles are genuinely more complex than Spanish’s simple el/la/los/las system, because the masculine article changes based on the FIRST SOUND of the following word, not just gender:

il  — before most consonants: il libro lo  — before s+consonant, z, gn, ps, x, y: lo studente, lo zaino l'  — before any vowel (masc. or fem.): l'amico, l'amica la  — feminine, before a consonant: la casa

The plural forms follow the same first-sound logic: i (plural of il), gli (plural of lo AND l’ when masculine), le (plural of la and l’ when feminine):

i libri, gli studenti, gli amici, le case, le amiche

Indefinite articles follow the identical first-sound logic: un (most masculine), uno (masculine before s+consonant/z), una (feminine before consonant), un’ (feminine before vowel, with apostrophe).
