Purpose

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to count from 0 to 100 in Italian and use numbers in basic everyday contexts.

Lesson Explanation

Numbers 0-10:

zero 0 uno 1 due 2 tre 3 quattro 4
cinque 5 sei 6 sette 7 otto 8 nove 9 dieci 10

Numbers 11-20, mostly single fused words:

undici 11 dodici 12 tredici 13 quattordici 14 quindici 15
sedici 16 diciassette 17 diciotto 18 diciannove 19 venti 20

From 20 onward, tens and ones fuse into a single word — but with a genuinely distinctive rule with no equivalent in Spanish, French, or German: when the ones digit is 1 (uno) or 8 (otto), the final vowel of the tens word is dropped before attaching:

venti + unoventuno (not "ventiuno")
venti + ottoventotto (not "ventiotto")
trenta 30 quaranta 40 cinquanta 50 sessanta 60
settanta 70 ottanta 80 novanta 90 cento 100

Unlike Spanish’s uno/una shortening before nouns (a pattern from an earlier-built Gabal course), Italian uno follows the indefinite article pattern covered in the very next lesson, changing to un, uno, or una depending on the following noun’s gender and initial sound.
