Purpose
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recite the Italian alphabet, pronounce every letter correctly, and read simple Italian words aloud with accurate stress and sound.
Lesson Explanation
The Italian alphabet technically has only 21 letters — j, k, w, x, y are not native Italian letters and appear only in foreign loanwords:
a b c d e f g h i l m n o p q r s t u v z Like Spanish, Italian vowels are consistent and predictable — but genuinely different in one key respect: e and o each have two possible sounds (open/closed), a subtlety that matters for regional accent but rarely changes meaning for a learner.
The single most important, genuinely distinctive rule in Italian pronunciation involves c and g, which change sound entirely depending on the following letter:
ca, co, cu — hard "k" sound: casa ce, ci — soft "ch" sound: cena che, chi — hard "k" sound restored by inserting "h": chiesa ga, go, gu — hard "g" sound: gatto ge, gi — soft "j" sound: gente ghe, ghi — hard "g" sound restored by inserting "h": spaghetti
A genuinely important related pattern: sc before e/i makes an “sh” sound (scienza), while gli makes a sound with no real English equivalent, close to the “lli” in “million” (famiglia), and gn sounds like the Spanish ñ (gnocchi).
