Goal

You’ll be able to correctly form basic negation using ne…pas, and know the genuinely important detail about the placement of these two negation words around the verb.

Learn

French basic negation genuinely differs from English’s single-word “not” — it uses two words, ne and pas, placed around the conjugated verb:

Je parle français.Je ne parle pas français.
(I speak French.) (I do not speak French.)

Notice ne goes directly before the verb, and pas directly after it — the verb itself sits genuinely sandwiched between the two negation words, unlike English’s single “not” placed after an auxiliary verb.

Ne contracts to n’ before a vowel sound, the same contraction principle from Part 1.2’s articles: je n’aime pas ça (I don’t like that), not je ne aime pas ça.

Beyond ne…pas, French has several other genuinely useful two-part negation structures following the same sandwich pattern: ne…jamais (never), ne…rien (nothing), ne…plus (no longer/no more) — je ne fume plus (I no longer smoke).

Decision Task

You want to say “I don’t like that” in French, using aimer (which starts with a vowel sound). Before reading on: would you write je ne aime pas ça or je n’aime pas ça?

Show Answer

Je n’aime pas ça. — since aime starts with a vowel sound, ne contracts to n’, the same contraction principle covered for articles in Part 1.2.

Common Mistake

Forgetting that ne contracts to n’ before a vowel sound, or placing pas in the wrong position relative to the verb. The verb must be genuinely sandwiched between ne (or n’) and pas, not placed elsewhere.
