Goal Seek (Data tab → What-If Analysis → Goal Seek) works backward: instead of calculating a result from known inputs (the normal way formulas work), you specify a target result, and Excel automatically adjusts one specific input cell to achieve it.
For example, if a loan payment formula depends on the loan amount, you could ask: “What loan amount would give me exactly a $500 monthly payment?” — rather than manually guessing different loan amounts and recalculating each time, Goal Seek automatically finds the precise loan amount that produces that exact target payment.
This is genuinely different from a normal formula, which always calculates forward (inputs → result). Goal Seek effectively works in reverse (desired result → required input), which is precisely why it’s the right tool specifically when you know what outcome you want, but not what input produces it.
A Data Table (also under What-If Analysis) shows how a formula’s result changes across a whole range of different input values at once — for example, showing a loan’s monthly payment for every interest rate from 3% to 7% in 0.5% increments, all calculated and displayed together in one table, rather than manually changing the rate and re-checking the result one value at a time.
